The Role of AI/ML in O-RAN Fronthaul Deployment for 5G & 6G
The shift to an Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) transforms 5G and 6G deployments, giving operators flexibility to build multi-vendor networks. However, as deployments move from greenfield to brownfield, new challenges arise—higher costs, inefficient fronthaul networking, and increasing complexity in Distributed Unit (DU) and Radio Unit (RU) management.
Conventional low-to-mid-cost COTS O-DU architecture worked for small deployments but failed to scale in dense networks. New tools are needed to commission, maintain, and monitor fronthaul networks, providing insights into utilization, latency, and load balancing.
